Bobbi Mastrangelo is internationally known for her artwork based on manhole covers, water covers, grates and drains, called “Grate Works of Art.” She is listed in Who’s Who in American Art and has her work in several museums.

In 2003, The Moscow TV Guide displayed a photo of Mastrangelo wearing a hard hat and a safety vest looking very strong, holding a manhole grate over her head. The grate was not was not heavy iron.  It was a wooden creation. Bobbi not only venerated the work of public employees in her art, but she in turn learned a great deal from them. The St. James Water District employees, Mario Palmieri and John Matleas explained the various water covers to Mastrangelo.

The smallest water covers of four inch diameter were hand hole covers, next came valve covers, 8 inches in diameter, then meter pit covers at 15 - 18 inches diameter and finally, Manhole covers, 24 inches in diameter. The Smithtown Highway employees explained about the road mark-outs such as the blue letters, WS for water service, yellow for gas and red for electric etc. They even pried open a manhole cover so Bobbi could view the underground chimney support.

The media were fascinated with Mastrangelo’s unusual manhole cover theme. There are four TV interviews of Bobbi Mastrangelo on YouTube. Long Islanders can view Bobbi’s work at Toast Coffee House in Patchogue, NY.
